  • The problem isn’t expecting you to be strong or be some great wise, extraordinary person in the face of great hardship. Because you know what? I don’t believe that you’re amazing and strong and kind and intelligent and giving and funny and brave because you’ve spent time being sick. I believe you are those things because that’s what you are in your heart. People just pay more attention when you’ve got some great struggle. They want to believe that they’ll be able to handle something like cancer if it comes their way, but a side effect of cancer is not being brave and strong and kind. That’s just who you are. I believe that’s who you are, and when I call you those things it’s NOT because you’re fighting cancer or lupus. It’s because that’s who you are, even when you don’t feel like it. You’re my hero, and not because you’ve kicked cancer’s ass multiple times or dealt with being sick. It’s because despite all of that, despite how easy it would be to get sucked into it you still make time to help people and you helped me get my entire fucking life together while going through a horrible time on your own.

    I wanted to keep this to myself because it’s mine and it’s special. But I also think I need to share with the world what a wonderful person Leah is and how lucky I am to call her my best friend. And how unbelievably fucking wise she is.

    2. prolixlyndz said: aw that’s so sweet :) but she’s right- adversity doesn’t make you strong or wise: its more like, your true character comes out. that’s why they call it a “test of character.” there’s just as many bitter ugly people facing adversity as kind and funny.
